City of Surprise seeking video messages, decorated signs for Veterans Day tribute

veterans day 2020

The City of Surprise Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting Veterans Day tribute submissions in two different formats. While we are not able to put on a parade this year due to COVID-19, we will be using signs and videos to create a virtual alternative to families lined along a parade route, or parade participants displaying signs of gratitude.

The video tribute will be a compilation of community messages to veterans that will be featured on Veterans Day on the Surprise TV cable channel, our Parks & Recreation social media pages (Facebook and Instagram), and the City of Surprise website at

Here’s how to participate:

  • Record a video tribute no longer than 15 seconds thanking our veterans
  • Once it’s complete, upload your video here:
  • Entries must be received by Thursday, October 29 at 5 p.m.

We welcome entries from clubs, organizations and residents who want to show their patriotic spirit and honor those who have bravely served our country.

In addition to the video tribute, the Parks and Recreation Department would also like to invite the community to pick up a coroplast sign to decorate in honor of veterans.

The signs will be displayed on Bullard Ave. near Surprise Stadium on Tuesday, November 10; Veterans Day - Wednesday, November 11; and Thursday, November 12 until 5:00 p.m.

Blank signs will be available for pick up Monday, October 12 through Friday, October 30 at the Parks and Recreation Office, 15960 N Bullard Ave, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Decorated signs must be dropped off at the Parks and Recreation Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, November 6. Decorations will not be provided, so please get creative with materials you have at home. Signs will not be returned.

We ask that both the video and sign submissions be family friendly, and we kindly ask that no politics be involved. The Parks and Recreation Staff will reserve the right to exclude from display or inclusion any signs or videos that are deemed inappropriate.

Please let our veterans know how important they are to Surprise by submitting your video or sign, or both!
