Due to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, City of Surprise sanitation customers ONLY are reminded there will be a modified collection schedule that will postpone collection by one day. Emergency Notification Testing near Palo Verde Generating Station Dec. 2
On Wednesday, Dec. 2, Palo Verde Generating Station (PVGS), in cooperation with local and State agencies, will test the outdoor warning sirens located within a 10-mile radius of the power plant. In conjunction with the siren test and in the same 10-mile radius, Maricopa County will test Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).

The city’s annual Deck the Hock on Hollyhock Street will be a drop-off / pick-up style celebration this year! You are invited to drop off ornaments for three holiday trees on display in front of the Surprise Senior Center and leave gifts under them for three local families in need. Governor Ducey Announces $25 Million for Medical Professionals, Additional Safety Measures
At a press conference at the state Public Health Lab, Governor Doug Ducey today announced a list of new actions to support hospitals and medical professionals and combat the spread of COVID-19. Arizona will invest $25 million to bolster hospital staffing in the midst of rising cases nationwide and reward frontline medical workers for their dedication. Arizona Director of Health Services Dr. Cara Christ also announced new guidance for holiday gatherings to help Arizonans make smart decisions and prevent new infections over the holidays.

As we enter the holiday season, Governor Doug Ducey today announced more than $1.6 million to expand assistance to Arizona food banks, helping them reach more families and seniors in need. The funding will enable food banks around the state to make more food home-deliveries to seniors and make more fresh produce and items available.

Surprise Small Business Relief Grant Deadline Extended to October 30
The deadline for eligible Surprise small businesses to apply for the Surprise Small Business Relief Grant has been extended from October 16th to October 30th. Funds are still available for emergency financial relief, and all eligible Surprise businesses are encouraged to apply.

S&P affirms city’s GO Bond rating; 2nd issuance goes to council Sept. 1
On November 7, 2017 registered voters in Surprise approved three General Obligation (GO) Bond questions in the areas of Public Safety, Traffic Congestion Mitigation and Pavement Preservation. The three questions represent 10 Capital Improvement Projects for a total bond amount of $59.5 Million. The first of two issuances received an AA rating from S&P and was issued in May 2018. The second issuance is scheduled for Council approval at the September 1st Council Meeting and has received an AA rating from S&P. The second issuance is scheduled to be sold in late September.

Tenant based rental assistance available for eligible Surprise residents
The City of Surprise Neighborhood Services Division has partnered with A New Leaf, a non-profit housing assistance provider, to offer rental assistance to eligible Surprise residents for up to 24 months. Rental assistance may include Housing Case Management, assistance with finding a qualified unit, and Housing Quality Standards (HQS) inspections.

Gov. Extends Pause of Some Business Operations; Announces Plan for Schools
Governor Doug Ducey today extended an executive order pausing operations on gyms, bars, nightclubs, movie theaters, water parks, and tubing. The order also prohibits large events and enables local law authorities to take immediate enforcement action to ensure compliance with the order. The pause of these operations will be reviewed for repeal or revision every two weeks.

Accreditation Team Invites Public Comment
As part of their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and providing the community with exceptional police services, the Surprise Police Department has voluntarily participated in the law enforcement accreditation process since 2007. The Surprise Police Department is one of approximately 1,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States that are currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA ®). In order to achieve and maintain accreditation, CALEA requires agencies to comply with more than 400 state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policies and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

Governor Extends COVID-19 Eviction Protections; Expands Rental Assistance Access
Governor Doug Ducey today signed an Executive Order extending a moratorium on residential evictions until October 31, 2020, providing continued protections for renters who are facing economic hardship as a result of COVID-19. The order ensures renters impacted by COVID-19 will be able to stay in their homes while extending the time to access rental assistance programs.

The City of Surprise Parks & Recreation Department will be offering a single combined fall season to include youth soccer, tee-ball, baseball, softball, volleyball and tennis leagues, as well as adult pickleball leagues. Registration for our 2020 fall sports season will run from July 13-August 1. Late registration starts August 3.

Governor Ducey Takes Further Action to Reverse COVID-19 Spread in Arizona
As part of continued efforts to reverse the trend of COVID-19 spread in Arizona, Governor Doug Ducey today signed an Executive Order to prohibit large gatherings, cease the issuance of new special event licenses and pause the operations of bars, gyms, movie theaters, waterparks and tubing rentals. The pause of these business operations takes effect at 8:00 p.m. today, Monday, June 29 and is in effect for one month.

July 4th Fireworks Display update – new “Glow Off” contest, ramada rentals now available
As previously announced, this year’s City of Surprise Fourth of July Celebration will be greatly modified in an effort to avoid mass gatherings and maintain physical distancing, in accordance with CDC recommendations to reduce the spread of COVID-19. To safely add to the celebration of our nation’s independence, we are introducing a fun social media contest. Additionally, park ramada rentals have resumed under guidance to reduce gathering size and maintain six feet physical distance from others.

Vote on favorite business ribbon cutting videos
The city featured 101 local Surprise businesses in short, 3-5 second videos where owners or staff cut a ribbon to celebrate reopening after closing temporarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Surprise Economic Development Department is now asking residents to vote on their favorite clips and answer questions about them to win prizes.

Surprise Sundancers raise nearly $175,000 for scholarships and youth programs
The Surprise Sundancers, the official Surprise Stadium Spring Training volunteer organization, with the support of the Arizona Community Foundation, awarded $155,000 in scholarships to 95 students from high schools in Surprise, El Mirage, Youngtown or Wickenburg. They also distributed funding to 12 non-profit organizations supporting local youth education and programs.

An Amber Alert has been issued for a teen missing out of Surprise. 14 year old Aubrey Gardner was reported as missing from her home in Surprise on September 8, 2018. Aubrey is described as a white female, approximately 5’7” tall and 110 lbs in weight with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a white T-Shirt with cartoon characters Lilo and Stitch, blue jeans, and skateboard shoes with roses imprinted on the toes.
