Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration & Service
In honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the City of Surprise is hosting its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration & Service and adding another event that same week! The programs are for all ages and will include a variety of local musicians, performers and speakers.
MLK Musical Celebration & Reflections
Wednesday, January 12 • 6 - 8 p.m.
Willow Canyon High School Auditorium • 17901 W. Lundberg St.
Enjoy community speakers and performing artists and groups like Canyon Ridge and Gideon Choir. Reverend Powell of Gideon Church and others will share reflections on the impact Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had on their lives and the inclusive work that is needed to continue his vision. Surprise Mayor Skip Hall, Shadow Ridge Principal Michael Hawkins, and Willow Canyon youth representative, Jessica Brown will also speak at the event.
Light refreshments will be served.

Gather with your community to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of celebration and service around Surprise.
Light breakfast will be served to the first 500 guests, starting at 8:30 a.m.
This event will include Keynote Speaker, Col. Wanda Wright, recognition of the art contest winners, service projects, and performances by Valley Vista High School, Ashton Ranch, American Idol Finalist LaKisha Jones, Gideon Missionary Baptist Choir, Arizona Redeemed Choir, Brooklyn Ball and more!

Col. Wanda Wright
Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services Director, Col. Wanda Wright has three decades of military experience and holds a B.S. in Management from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a M.B.A from Webster University in South Carolina, a M.P.A. from the University of Arizona and a M.A. in Educational Leadership from Arizona State University. Col. Wright’s decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Best known to millions as a top four finalist during the 2007 season of “American Idol,” LaKisha Jones is ready to share her expressive, full-bodied and arresting vocals. You may also have seen her on the Broadway stage in the Oprah Winfrey produced, Tony Award-winning musical, “The Color Purple.” Following her Broadway stint Jones provided vocal coaching on MTV’s reality competition “Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods,” a show designed to find and hone Broadway’s next star.
