Primary Election results in for Mayor; Districts 2, 3, 4 & 5 Councilmembers

Surprise voters elected two new city councilmembers in Districts 2 and 5, returned incumbents to District 3 and 4, and re-elected the mayor in Tuesday’s primary election. 

The news is based on preliminary, unofficial results reported by the Maricopa County Elections Department.  

Skip Hall was re-elected as mayor, having received 24,784 votes or 96.92% of the vote. Certified write-in candidate Cheryl Packham received 407 votes (1.59%) 

In District 2, Alyson “Aly” Cline defeated Wendell Fountain with a vote tally of 4,772 votes (63.77%), versus Fountain’s 2,683 votes (35.85%). The seat is currently held by Nancy Hayden, who did not run for reelection. 

In District 3, incumbent councilmember Patrick Duffy defeated Greg Norberg. Duffy received 2,891 votes (68.31%) to Norberg’s 1,316 votes (31.1%). 

In District 4, incumbent councilmember Ken Remley ran unopposed and received 2,499 votes (98.62%).  

In District 5, Jack Hastings won the seat with 2,063 votes (59.15%), while incumbent councilmember David Sanders received 1,331 votes (38.16%). Certified write-in candidate Kawika Henderson received 71 votes (2.04%).

The positions of mayor and council in Districts 2, 3 and 4 carry a four-year term, expiring December 31, 2024. District 5 carries a two-year term ending December 31, 2022. The winners will assume office the first meeting in January 2021 after receiving the official oath of office.  

All results are preliminary until all of the ballots dropped off on Election Day and all Provisional Ballots are counted. A final ballot tally is expected by August 24, if not sooner, from the Maricopa County Elections Department.
