Surprise sanitation and stormwater utility customers will see changes on city utility statements beginning July 1, 2020, as rate increases determined by structured schedules are implemented.
Beginning July 1, 2020, single-family solid waste (trash) customers will pay a monthly base rate of $23.40. The rate schedule will then increase the rate by $0.10 each fiscal year beginning in 2021, bringing the rate to $23.70 on July 1, 2023. Residential water and wastewater utility rates will remain unchanged.
The Utility Rate Study, approved in February 2019, created a five-year structured schedule to obtain revenues required to operate utilities and maintain infrastructure while also considering asset replacement and emergency funding needs.
The first scheduled increase of the Stormwater Utility will also go into effect on July 1, 2020. Single-family residential homes in Surprise will see a $0.75 increase, bringing the utility fee to $2.75 each month.
The Stormwater Utility fee was adopted in 2016 and implemented on November 1, 2016 to enable the city to cover the costs to maintain stormwater related infrastructure such as curbs and gutters, pipes and catch basins, comply with regulatory requirements, and develop projects to protect and prevent problems often caused by stormwater such as flooding.
Customers who have pre-arranged or automatic payments with their financial institution are urged to update their accounts to reflect changes to utility rates.
