The City of Surprise is excited to host the Fourth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service on Saturday, January 18th, 2020 in the outside courtyard of City Hall, located at 16000 North Civic Center Plaza.

A light breakfast will be served to the first 500 attendees beginning at 8:30 a.m. A program celebrating Dr. King’s life will begin at 9 a.m. and will include a variety of local musicians, performers and fun for the entire family. Our emcee is Steve Irvin, Emmy award-winning journalist and anchor of ABC15 News. Our keynote speaker is Kenja Hassan, Director of Cultural Relations in ASU’s Office of Government and Community Engagement. Hassan works to develop a meaningful presence for ASU in diverse communities and launched the State of Black Arizona. Around 9:45 a.m., all will be invited to participate in Surprise Day of Service projects throughout the city. More than 400 volunteers are expected to serve their neighbors with more than a dozen service projects.

How to get involved:

  • Individuals/Families: Join us for the breakfast, program and day of service! If you can only attend the service project portion, please arrive by 9:45 a.m. to receive an assignment.
  • Groups: If you plan on bringing your group/club/congregation and would like to participate in the service projects, please RSVP to Ervin Cutwright at
  • Service Project Ideas: If you would like to suggest service projects, please contact Ervin Cutwright at
