Volunteers are needed to provide free tax return preparation for low-to-moderate income individuals and families through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. No prior tax preparation is needed; training will be provided.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities within the VITA program:

  • Tax Preparer – Prepares basic 1040 tax returns and related schedules. Individual will also be able to answer tax law questions.
  • Greeter/Screener – Greets taxpayers to create a welcoming atmosphere and performs the screening process of all taxpayers prior to moving them to the Tax Preparer.
  • Tax Return Closer – After tax returns are reviewed, the Closer meets with taxpayers to finish the process of printing and having the returns signed.
  • Interpreter – Provide bilingual assistance for Spanish speaking clients seeking tax preparation services.

IRS Certification / Tax Law training classes will be held late November through January throughout the West Valley, including at the Surprise Resource Center. Courses are typically 24 hours total, with the certification test taken online during the last class.

Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 25 hours at a VITA site during tax season, late January through April 15.
