Surprise draws national attention showcasing growing sport of pickleball


The City of Surprise is gaining national attention for the fast-growing game of pickleball - a paddle sport combining elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. This season, the city is hosting more players and spectators from across the country than ever before for a series of championship tournaments!

The following tournaments will take place at the Surprise Pickleball Courts, located at 15931 N. Bullard Ave. Admission is free, so come out and watch the action!

  • Super Senior West Pickleball Championships, September 30 – October 3
    The 2019 SSIPA West Pickleball Championships, a USAPA sanctioned tournament will draw over 800 players of all skill levels, ages 60 and over.
  • Surprise Pickleball Association Monster Smash, October 30 – November 3
    SPA and USAPA sanctioned double elimination pickleball tournament featuring women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and senior mixed doubles.
  • Super Senior World Pickleball Championships, December 2-6
    USAPA sanctioned pickleball tournament featuring over 800 players competing in women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and senior mixed doubles. Skill groups 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0.
  • Tommy Wong Pickleball Classic, January 3-6
    SPA and USAPA sanctioned, double-elimination pickleball tournament featuring women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and senior mixed doubles.
  • USAPA Southwest Regional Pickleball Tournament, January 8-12
    USAPA sanctioned event and qualifier for the 2020 National tournament. 

With 16 city courts, Surprise’s pickleball complex is one of the best in the state of Arizona – adding to the variety of championship-level sporting events the city is able to host. These tournaments contribute tourism dollars to our local economy and brand Surprise as a premier sports tourism destination.

The City of Surprise Sports & Tourism department is responsible for managing Major League Baseball Spring Training at Surprise Stadium, shared-use facility partnerships with Ottawa University, major tennis tournaments, and tourism driven events, festivals, and sports tournaments.
