Surprise Police warn community members about telephone scam

YOUR Surprise Police would like to alert the public of a telephone scam being attempted in our community. This scam has been attempted several times on multiple victims here in Surprise over the past two days.

Victims report receiving a phone call from an unknown suspect who identifies themselves as a member of the Surprise Police Department. Those receiving the calls have reported the phone number came across as the Surprise Police Department’s non-emergency telephone number (623-222-4000). The suspect informs the victims they failed to appear for jury duty and/or had a warrant out for their arrest.

The victim is told if they fail to pay a bond, sometimes up to $4000, it will result in an officer being dispatched to their residence to take them into custody. The suspect requests payment in the form of various types of gift cards. YOUR Surprise Police Department never requests or accepts bond payments in the form of gift cards and never over the phone.

These calls are a scam. Please do not pay the “bond” to avoid going to jail and if you receive a call from a person claiming to be law enforcement and/or threatening law enforcement action as part of this fraudulent scheme, please contact the Surprise Police Department at (623) 222-4000 to report the incident.
