Surprise basketball coach wins Jr. NBA Coach of the Year

Coach Chavez web

Congratulations to Coach Leon Chavez of the Surprise Jr. Suns League for being awarded the 2019 Jr. NBA Coach of the Year, representing the Phoenix Mercury.

The Jr. NBA Coach of the Year program is designed to recognize and celebrate youth basketball coaches in NBA and WNBA team markets that demonstrate outstanding integrity, character, and leadership; and in doing so have extraordinary impact on young people on and off the court.

For the past five years Coach Chavez has coached girl’s teams in both winter and summer basketball leagues. Prior to coaching for the girl’s league, Chavez coached his son for three years in the boy’s basketball league.

Chavez coaches with a positive, fun attitude while challenging players to continually develop their skills.  His success is evident in that he regularly has more player requests than can be allow for one team.  Not wanting to disappoint these players, Coach Chavez has several times volunteered to coach two separate teams simultaneously in the girls’ division.

The Community and Recreation Services Department would like to give a big “thank you” to Coach Chavez for his commitment to making his players and the city league successful, and congratulate him on this well-deserved award.
