The City of Surprise has won an international award for its annual Surprise Retail Survey from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).
The project won a “Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award” in the category of Business Retention and Expansion Program of 3 Years or More. The honor was presented to the city’s Economic Development Director Jeanine Jerkovic at an awards ceremony on October 2, during the IEDC Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
Surprise implemented the annual retail survey in 2015. Residents and visitors were invited to share their thoughts and opinions on the retail needs of the community through an online survey. With more than 2,800 respondents the first year and more than 3,000 respondents in subsequent years, the retail survey continues to be one of the city’s top-performing surveys.
Each year, the community is asked to identify their favorite local retailers and restaurants; and every other year they are also asked which retailers and restaurants they most desire to open in Surprise. The city’s Economic Development team has been able to utilize the survey results to assist with both business attraction and retention efforts. Each year, businesses identified as a “Local Favorite” receive a congratulatory letter from the mayor, a certificate, and a window decal to proudly display their designation. The businesses are also invited to a hosted MLB Spring Training game at Surprise Stadium, allowing city staff to maintain or develop relationships with the business owners.
