The city of Surprise took home a statewide award this week for an adaptive recreation program that gives athletes with physical and developmental disabilities a chance to train with Major League Baseball players and coaches.

The city’s Adaptive Spring Sports Training Clinic won the “Outstanding Program – Adaptive Program Award” for populations over 100,000 at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association Awards on July 25 in Scottsdale.

The sports training clinic was offered in partnership with the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers and gave 100 athletes the opportunity to work on their hitting, fielding, throwing, and catching skills with some of their favorite Major League Baseball players.

The city would like to thank everyone who helped to make the clinic such a success, including the Rangers and Royals organizations, the seven major league athletes, 11 coaches and 30 volunteers who enthusiastically donated their time.

A video showcasing the clinic was produced by the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association and can be viewed here:

The city’s Adaptive Spring Sports Training Clinic is just one of the many adaptive recreation programs offered by the City of Surprise. The city is committed to offering quality recreation activities in a safe, inclusive and accessible environment.
