Surprise Hosts Veterans Bridge Naming Celebration
Surprise, AZ (April 16, 2019) The City of Surprise is hosting a celebration on Friday, April 26 to mark the renaming of the bridge at US 60 (Grand Ave) and Bell Road to Veterans Bridge.
The Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names voted to approve the naming at their January 22 meeting in response to a proposal by Senator Rick Gray.
“This is such a fitting name for this bridge,” says Mayor Hall. “We have a high population of Veteran residents in our city, and I hope this serves as a reminder that they are honored and supported in Surprise.”
Surprise has an adult population of approximately 14 percent veterans. The city’s Human Service and Community Vitality Department has a number of programs targeted at assisting veterans with finding employment and connections to housing and health and mental health care.
Information on those resources will be available at the Veterans Bridge Naming Celebration, which will be held in the Surprise Marketplace Target parking lot (just east of BBVA Compass Bank), 13731 W. Bell Road, on Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m.
The celebration will include remarks from city and state officials, and the unveiling of new bridge signage.
Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will add Veterans Bridge signage to the roadway the week of April 22, and the city has plans for an on-bridge signage application in the coming months.
The Bell Road bridge over US 60 (Grand Avenue) was constructed by ADOT to improve congestion at the busy intersection. The project was fully completed in March 2017.
