Join city of Surprise for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration & Service on Jan. 19
Surprise, AZ (December 12, 2018) Join the city of Surprise for the 3rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration & Service on Saturday, January 19, 2019.
The event will be held at the Surprise City Hall courtyard, 16000 N Civic Center Plaza. It kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with musical performances and a light breakfast for the first 500 attendees. A program celebrating Dr. King’s life will begin at 9 a.m. The program will be emceed by Susan Casper, host of ABC 15’s Sonoran Living and will include music, dance and inspiring speakers.
Following the program, at approximately 10 a.m., hundreds of volunteers will go out and complete various community service projects throughout the city and region. The projects will be organized with the intent of fostering community pride in the spirit of unity, as exemplified by the late civil rights leader.
Projects will last approximately 1-4 hours and will include painting, landscaping, removal of refuse, and serving at the food bank and other community and nonprofit agencies. Volunteer opportunities are open to groups, families, youth and adults.
How to get involved:
• Individuals/Families – Join us for the breakfast, the program and the day of service! If you can only attend the service project portion of the day, please arrive at 9:45 a.m. to receive an assignment. Advanced registration is not required, but is helpful in determining volunteer assignments. Please email Ervin Cutwright at Ervin.Cutwright@surpriseaz.gov if you are interested in volunteering.
• Groups – If you plan on bringing your group/club/congregation and would like to participate in the service projects, please RSVP your group name and estimated number of people to Ervin Cutwright at Ervin.Cutwright@surpriseaz.gov.
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration & Service is presented by the city of Surprise Human Service and Community Vitality Department and supported by several Gold and Silver level event sponsors.
