Council to take action on Utility Rate Study public notice at Dec 18 meeting
Surprise, AZ (December 4, 2018) Council will take action on whether to proceed with a 60-day public ‘Notice of Intent to Increase Rates’ on the proposed Utility Rate Study during the 6 p.m. Regular City Council Meeting on Tuesday, December 18 at city hall, 16000 N. Civic Center Plaza.
Customers will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their opinions on the proposed rate adjustments during the 60-day time period.
If the Utility Rate Study is approved in February, city-serviced single-family residential solid waste customers would see a new base rate of $20.70 beginning July 1, 2019, a $3.74 per month increase of the current rate; the rate would increase to $23.40 on July 1, 2020. The schedule would then adjust the solid waste rate by $0.10 each fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021, bringing the rate to $23.70 in July 1, 2023.
See the proposed rate adjustment schedule.
Residential water and wastewater rates would remain unchanged in fiscal years (FY) 2020-2024.
Residents who are serviced by private solid waste providers (Park and Sons, etc.) would not be impacted by the Surprise solid waste adjustment; learn who provides your solid waste utility services at surpriseaz.gov/mysurpriseaddress.
The tentative timeline for the Rate Study is:
- December 18, 2018: Public ‘Notice of Intent to Increase Rates’
- February 19, 2019: Public hearing; Council vote on Rate Study
- July 1, 2019: If approved, new base rates effective
A draft of the Utility Rate Study report containing detailed information regarding the five-year rate study, including the recommended adjustment schedule to solid waste (trash/recycling) rates for city-serviced customers will be made available on the city’s website following the meeting.
