Police safely apprehend armed suspect during stand-off on Grand Avenue
S?urprise, A?Z (April 5, 2017) This evening, at approximately 6:15 pm, the Surprise Police Department, with assistance from other local law enforcement agencies, apprehended a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a vehicle with a weapon on Grand Avenue in Wittmann, Arizona. The suspect, now identified as, Gregory Rodvelt, a 65 year old man from Sun City West, will be transported and booked into the Maricopa 4th Avenue Jail for several felony offenses stemming from the incident.
The incident began earlier today at around 3:30 pm, after a victim contacted the Surprise Police to report a man had brandished a firearm. The incident reportedly occurred near Grand Avenue and Bell Road in Surprise. The victim provided officers with a physical description of the suspect and a description of the suspects’ vehicle; including the license plate.
A short time later, the responding police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on Grand Avenue just south of Center Street in Wittmann, Arizona. The suspect, Mr. Rodvelt, was immediately found to be uncooperative and refused to surrender to the officers. Mr Rodvelt also relayed to the officers on scene he did have a weapon in the vehicle with him at that time.
After securing the scene and rerouting traffic on Grand Avenue, the police were able to establish telephone communication with the suspect. The suspect continued to refuse the commands of the officer and refused to self-surrender. At that time, additional resources were deployed to the scene, including the Surprise Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiations Team, a police helicopter and a SWAT team from the Department of Public Safety.
While negotiators continued to attempt to obtain a peaceful resolution with the suspect, SWAT officers were able maneuver into and obtain a position of advantage on the suspect vehicle. A few moments later, Mr. Rodvelt surrendered to the officers without further incident or injury to the suspect, the responding officers, or the many civilians who were close by in the area at the time of the stand-off.
The men and women of the Surprise Police Department want to thank our law enforcement partners at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Public Safety, and the Wickenburg Police Department for all their assistance. It was through the combined efforts of all that we were able to safely apprehend Mr. Rodvelt. The police also want to thank the many motorists who cooperated with law enforcement as they were diverted and rerouted around the roadway closure during the time of the incident.
