Police arrest local man for 1st degree murder in Surprise
Surprise, AZ (October 3, 2016) Recently, the Surprise Police apprehended Mr. Roger Couillard, a 66 year old man of Surprise, for his involvement in a fatal traffic collision that occurred on Monday, September 12, 2016.
On September 12, shortly before 11 pm, the Surprise Police received a report of a possibly intoxicated subject outside of a local restaurant. The caller reported the subject had entered a Ford pickup truck and left the area. A few minutes later, an officer located a vehicle matching the description and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Instead of stopping for the officer, the vehicle rapidly accelerated and sped away southbound on Reems Road. A short time later, the fleeing vehicle collided into a small passenger vehicle in the intersection of North Reems Road and West Waddell Road. The collision claimed the life of the driver of the other vehicle, 19 year old Alexis Rumer, and seriously injured the passenger, 22 year old Cameron Watkins.
On Friday, September 30, 2016, Mr. Couillard, the driver of the pick-up truck, was released from a local medical facility and subsequently arrested, transported, and booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail for 1st Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault.
