Back to school is a busy time for Bullard Avenue
Surprise, AZ (July 25, 2016) Next week is back to school time for many charter and public school students in Surprise! With five elementary schools in the area of Bullard Avenue, (Greenway – Peoria), the City of Surprise Police and Public Works Departments offer the following safety information.
Traffic is particularly busy on the first day of and first week of school, as parents and students readjust to morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up routines. Some charter schools in the area begin on Monday, August 1; with Dysart USD schools beginning on Wednesday, August 3.
Here are a few safety tips for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to ensure a safe start to the school year:
- Slow Down
- Be Alert
- Be Patient
- Walk or Bike to School When Possible
- Follow All Traffic Safety Rules
- Cross at Crosswalks
- Stay Off Mobile Devices
- Be Respectful of the Surrounding Neighborhoods and Others Sharing the Road
Prior to the start of the 2015-2016 school year, traffic patterns on Bullard Avenue were significantly changed to enhance the safety of students travelling to the area schools. After much community discussion as well as observations of the positive and negative impacts of these changes, a new plan was adopted to further change the traffic patterns on Bullard. As was announced in January of this year, the project design is underway. The plan includes the installation of traffic signals at the Acoma/Bullard and Sweetwater/Bullard intersections, as well as the restoration of two lanes of travel in each direction. A tentative construction start date of fall 2017 has been set with completion anticipated in early 2018.
While we wait for these long-term improvements, please plan on heavier than normal traffic volumes on school days with occasional traffic delays.
