Surprise Police arrest local teen for Swatting

Surprise, AZ (May 15, 2015) On May 14, 2015, after a lengthy investigation involving federal and California law enforcement officials, detectives from the Surprise Police Department Property Crimes Unit arrested a 17-year old male resident of Surprise for creating a hoax of terroristic threats, Swatting.

According to ARS 13-2925, Swatting is the act of maliciously and intentionally falsely reporting an act to an emergency service such that an emergency response is likely to be dispatched-such as a SWAT team, bomb squad, or other law enforcement  units or medical personnel (Fire, EMS, etc.). Generally a Swatting call requests emergency personnel to a residence, school, or business for critical police intervention (often for a hostage situation or multiple gunmen who are in the process of committing a homicide).

Recently, the U.S. Secret Service, the Monterrey County Sheriff's Office, and the Surprise Police served a search warrant at the teen suspect’s residence. During the service of the warrant, multiple pieces of evidence, to include; routers, computers, and cellular phones, were collected for forensic examination.

After the teen suspect was taken into custody, he was later interviewed by the US Secret Service, a Monterey County Sheriff Deputy, and Detective Baldwin from the Surprise Police Department. The teen provided a full confession to the law enforcement officials and was later released to the custody of his parents.

The next step for the investigators will be conducting a complete forensic analysis of the electronic devices seized and pursuing criminal charges through the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
