Police arrest man for climbing a light pole in Surprise

Surprise, AZ (May 14, 2015) Shortly after 4:00 PM, on Thursday, May 14, 2015, the Surprise Police, with assistance from the Surprise Fire Department, were able to successfully negotiate and safely remove the man from the 80-foot light pole in Surprise.

Later, the police identified the man as Michael Lewis-Arthur Meyer, a 36 year old man from Tucson, Arizona.  After being removed from the light pole, Mr. Meyer was examined on scene by responding medical personnel. During his overall health assessment, Mr. Meyer did not exhibit or express any direct signs associated with a mental health crisis. After being medically cleared, Mr. Meyer was later arrested, transported and booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail. Mr. Meyer is facing criminal charges for Criminal Trespassing in the Third Degree and Disorderly Conduct.

Due to Mr. Meyer’s invocation of his Miranda Warnings, police were unable to determine the exact reason why he climbed up a light pole. However, he did make a variety of statements while standing on the platform near the top of the light pole. Those statements loosely referenced some advocating for veteran rights and the man’s concern for the treatment of veterans.
