Surprise supports statewide simulcast of report investigating heroin’s hold on AZ

Surprise, AZ (January 6, 2015) On Jan. 13, TV and radio outlets across Arizona will simultaneously broadcast a 30-minute commercial-free investigative report on the growing perils of heroin and opioid use.

Surprise Police Chief Michael Frazier sat on the steering committee for the project, produced by Arizona State University’s Cronkite School student journalists, and believes it is critical that this message about heroin gets out.

“In October 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that, nationally, heroin overdose deaths doubled between 2010 and 2012,” says Chief Frazier. “In Arizona, there were 90 heroin overdose deaths in 2012; in 2013, there were 130- a 45 percent increase.”

The statewide simulcast of “Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s Hold on Arizona” will air on more than 30 TV stations in Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma and most of the state’s radio stations. Most will broadcast at 6:30 p.m.

Surprise 11 has been given permission to re-broadcast the report at a later date.
