Surprise Police to Increase Patrols at Shopping Centers

Surprise, AZ (December 2, 2014)… In an attempt to discourage and apprehend would-be thieves, the Surprise Police Department is launching an “Operation Safe Holiday” campaign of proactive and highly visible patrols in the busiest shopping areas.  Uniformed Officers and Citizen’s Patrol volunteers will be monitoring strip mall and department store parking lots looking for criminal activity, keeping the peace and ensuring traffic flows as efficiently as possible.  The operation will take place throughout the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

“Even with the enhanced patrols, we need the public’s help” says Lieutenant Mike Donovan, supervisor of the Crime Prevention Unit.  Here are a few safety tips:
  • Shop during daylight hours, if you must go out at night don’t shop alone.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Beware of strangers; Con-Artist will try anything to distract you.
  • Park in well-lit areas and remember where you parked.
  • Never leave valuables in plain view in your vehicle.
  • Be alert when walking to your vehicle and have your car keys ready before you leave the store.
  • Lock and secure your vehicle.
  • Report suspicious persons immediately!

The Surprise Police Department hopes that keeping these tips in mind will make for a safer and happy holiday season.
