Surprise Police carry the torch for Special Olympics

SURPRISE, AZ. (April 28, 2014)… Members of the Surprise Police Department will be running several miles along Grand Avenue on Thursday, May 1, 2014 to support the Special Olympics of Arizona. Surprise Police will be joining many other law enforcement agencies in Arizona who will relay the Special Olympics torch through the state in an effort to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics. Members of the Surprise Police Department will receive the torch from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning and will run approximately 4 miles along Grand Avenue before passing the torch to the El Mirage Police Department.

In 2013, law enforcement agencies in Arizona collectively raised $1.1 million dollars to help the Special Olympics of Arizona. These funds are used to pay for all of the costs associated with athletes’ training, equipment, uniforms, food, and lodging during competitions. This year marks the 29th annual torch run to benefit Special Olympics in Arizona and will culminate in the opening of the games at Grand Canyon University on May 2, 2014.
