Surprise Police - Safety reminder for New Year celebrations
Surprise, AZ (December 26, 2013) As members of the community celebrate the New Year, Surprise Police are asking residents and guests of Surprise to keep guns and fireworks out of their celebrations.
Celebratory gunfire is a felony crime and is extremely dangerous. A bullet that is shot into the air falls back to the ground with enough speed to kill a person. 14-year-old Shannon Smith was killed in Phoenix in 1999 by a bullet that had been fired into the air more than a mile away from where she was in her backyard that day. The use of fireworks is also illegal in the City of Surprise and should not be part of the New Year celebration. Although fireworks may be sold at locations in Surprise, city ordinance makes the use of fireworks a crime that is punishable by civil and criminal penalties.
As with any celebration, the Surprise Police Department would like remind everyone about the dangers of drinking alcoholic beverages and driving. Please do your part in making this holiday season the safest possible – drink responsibly and Never Drink and Drive. It is a Crime – you Will do time!!!
The Surprise Police Department asks that anyone who sees any of these illegal activities to report it to police by calling (623) 222-4000, or dial 911 when there is an emergency.
