Accreditation team invites public comment on Surprise PD

Surprise, AZ. (August 12, 2013) As part of their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and providing the community with exceptional police services, the Surprise Police Department has voluntarily participated in the accreditation process since 2007.  The Surprise Police Department is one of 595 law enforcement agencies in the United States that are currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA®).  In order to achieve and maintain accreditation, CALEA requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policies and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

Assessors from CALEA will be conducting an on-site assessment of the Surprise Police Department as part of the reaccreditation process prior to granting accreditation for another 3 years.  During the on-site assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, August 19, 2013, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.  The session will be conducted in the Surprise City Hall Council Chambers located at 16000 North Civic Center Plaza, Surprise, AZ.

If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone.  The public may call (623) 222-7945 on August 20, 2013, between the hours of 1:00 and 3:00 PM and speak to one of the Assessors.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to three minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA Standards.  A copy of the standards is available at the Surprise Police Department, located at 14250 W. Statler Plaza, Ste. 103.  Local contact is Shaughna Vaughan who can be reached at (623) 222-4248.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Surprise Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for reaccreditation are requested to write: Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA®), 13575 Heathcoat Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, VA. 20155.

The Surprise Police Department must comply with 481 standards in order to gain reaccredited status.

The CALEA Program Manager for Surprise Police Department is Steve Mitchell.  He said the assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.

The assessors are: Chief Jack O’Donnell (retired), West Des Moines Police Department, West Des Moines, Iowa, and Bob Grant, accreditation manager, Camrose Police Service, Camrose, Alberta, Canada.  Once the CALEA Assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted reaccredited status.

Reaccreditation is for three years, during which the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited in 2007 and reaccredited in 2010.
