Surprise Police host “Prescription Drug Take Back Day”
Surprise, AZ (September 20, 2012) The Surprise Police Department is participating in the nationwide “Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” with two events in Surprise on Saturday, September 29.
Through the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) program, Surprsie Police are asking residents to properly dispose of their unused, unneeded and expired non-liquid medicine.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, as medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to theft, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, most people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.
The collection areas in Surprise will be open from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the following locations:
• Surprise Police Department parking lot - 14250 W. Statler Plaza
• Sun City Grand CAM office - 19726 N. Remington Drive
Additional collection sites in Arizona can be found by going to www.dea.gov.
Note: Needles and liquid medications will NOT be accepted per DEA guidelines.
