Surprise Police Investigate Robbery

Surprise, Ariz. (August 31, 2011)… On Monday, August 29, 2011, at approximately 10:30 a.m., Surprise Police responded to a robbery that took place in a parking lot near the 14200 block of West Grand Avenue, Surprise, AZ.  The victim, a 32 year old female from Surprise, advised officers that she had driven to the parking lot to drop off her friend (female) who was going to be met by some acquaintances.  Upon her arrival, her friend’s acquaintances were waiting in the parking lot in a dark color Nissan Altima or Maxima.

The victim stated that once her friend exited her vehicle and began loading her belongings into the Nissan, a white male subject known to her as “Mike” exited the Nissan and sat in the passenger seat of her car.  The suspect then removed the keys from the ignition and put a gun to her head.  When the victim screamed for her friend, the suspect hit her with the handgun.  A second suspect, a Hispanic male, then approached the driver’s side door.  The Hispanic male then attempted to tie the victim’s hands with plastic zip-ties and told her to get in the backseat.  Once in the backseat, the victim was able to unlock the back door and run from the vehicle.  The two male suspects then left in the victim’s car and her female friend drove off in the Nissan.

The victim’s vehicle was located (abandoned) shortly after the incident at the 13900 block of Northwest Grand Avenue.

Investigators later learned that the husband of the victim in this incident, Michael Burton, was identified as the suspect in a homicide that occurred in the City of Scottsdale on Tuesday, August 30, 2011.  Additionally, investigators confirmed that the victim of the homicide, Michael Gordin, was one of the suspects from the robbery that occurred on Monday in the City of Surprise.  Scottsdale Police indicated that Burton went to the residence of Michael Gordin to confront him in retaliation for the incident that happened the previous day.

Through the investigation, police learned that the involved parties knew each other prior to these incidents and suspect illegal drug activity may be involved.  The investigations are both ongoing at this time.
