Surprise Police launch “Operation Safe Holiday”

SURPRISE, AZ (November 20, 2007) In an attempt to discourage and apprehend would-be thieves, the Surprise Police Department is launching its annual “Operation Safe Holiday” campaign. Comprised of proactive and highly visible patrols, uniformed officers and Citizen Patrol members will be monitoring local shopping area hot spots looking for criminal activity. The operation begins Friday, November 23 and runs throughout the holiday season.

“Even with the enhanced patrols, we need the public’s help,” says Sergeant Mark Ortega, supervisor of the Crime Prevention Unit. Here are a few safety tips:

  • Shop during daylight hours If you must go out at night, take a friend or family member
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
  • Beware of strangers, con-artists will try anything to distract you
  • Park in well lit areas and remember where you parked
  • Never leave valuables in plain view in your vehicle
  • Be alert when walking to your vehicle and have your car keys ready before you leave the store
  • Report suspicious persons immediately!
Sergeant Ortega hopes that keeping these tips in mind will make for a safe and happy holiday season.
