Surprise City Council Designates Juneteenth a City Holiday

Surprise, AZ (May 3, 2022) The Surprise City Council voted at their May 3, 2022 Regular City Council Meeting to recognize June 19th as an annual paid City holiday in observance of Juneteenth.

This year, the City of Surprise will observe Juneteenth on Monday, June 20 since the holiday falls on a Sunday.

Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to announce that all enslaved people were free. This came two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and it honors the end of slavery in the United States.

Juneteenth was officially designated as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021.
