Parks & Recreation receives award for adaptive programming
Surprise, AZ (November 16, 2021) City of Surprise Parks & Recreation has won the Outstanding Program - Adaptive Program Award through the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association. The Department was selected for the award based on the overwhelming success of Virtual Bingo programs offered multiple times throughout 2020 and 2021.
Adaptive Virtual BINGO, developed in response to COVID-19, is an opportunity for participants with disabilities and their families to have some fun. Based on the vulnerability some of these individuals face with the virus, it was important for the Department to develop a virtual alternative where safe, physical-distancing could be controlled – thus allowing the participants to still socialize, build bonds, dress up, and even win prizes. The program ended up serving over 200 participants, ages of 3-75.
Jenni Corkin, Surprise Parks & Recreation Coordinator, and Frank D’Andrea, Administrative Specialist for the Department, accepted the award at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Conference, held at the We-Ko-Pa Resort in Fort McDowell on November 2 and 3.
