City of Surprise opens recruitment for a City Manager

Surprise, AZ (July 7, 2021) The city of Surprise is seeking a City Manager. City leaders are looking for a seasoned public sector professional with a proven track record of quickly and effectively assessing, engaging with, and acclimating to an organization’s needs, and embracing challenging opportunities for strategic success.

This fiscally savvy individual will be dedicated to the improvement of local economies and committed to active community participation and open, transparent government. A bridge builder who embraces respectful, collaborative partnerships as a method of improving services and creating efficiencies will be successful in this role.

The new City Manager will possess the emotional intelligence necessary to effectively lead and manage a diverse, high-performing staff and the political aptitude to anticipate issues of concern. Exceptional communication skills and a respectful leadership presence supported by tangible accomplishments are expected.

The city of Surprise operates under a council-manager form of government. 

Appointed by and reporting to the Mayor and City Council, the City Manager is the chief administrative officer of the City of Surprise and is responsible for providing administrative leadership in the daily management of the City. It is the responsibility of the City Council to set policy.

Surprise has a workforce of 1025.9 full-time equivalents and an FY22 budget of $437.8 million dollars, including transfers of $48.1 million, for a total of $485.9 million.

The City Manager application period is open now and runs through July 30. Interview and selection activities are tentatively scheduled for September 28-30. The city anticipates filling the position in December 2021.

This vacancy is the result of the impending January 2022 retirement of current City Manager Michael Frazier, who originally joined the city in 2011 as the Police Chief.
