City’s summer job program for teens now accepting applications

Surprise, AZ (March 23, 2021) The City of Surprise is offering a summer job program for income-eligible Surprise teens between the ages of 15 – 19.

Through the City Council-approved Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), applicants must be available to work up to 25 hours a week for five weeks between 
June 14 through July 16. Chosen interns will earn $12.15 per hour.  

Interns will be selected to receive professional development training in various departments across the city from working with your hands in our public works department or organizing activities for our seniors.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Family income must be at or below 80% of area median income 
  • Must be a full time student 
  • Must reside in Surprise 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation 
  • Must submit letter of recommendation 

Applicants will also have to submit income verification documents at the time of application. Applicant names must be written to match what is listed on their Social Security Card. Applicants are also asked to list areas of interest so that they may be placed in a complementary employment opportunity.

In-person submissions will be accepted by scheduling an appointment with Gina Neria through Friday, April 9, 2021 at 4 p.m. Mailed applications should be postmarked by Friday, April 9. Electronic application submissions will be accepted through Saturday, April 10. Applications can be submitted via e-mail to or mailed to/dropped off at Surprise Senior Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Qualified applicants will be contacted and then screened through an interview process in April 2021. Final participants will be notified if they are selected for a position in May and must pass pre-employment screening the City deems necessary.

The City of Surprise has developed and implemented COVID-19 procedures in compliance with the CDC guidelines for the health and safety of our staff and participants.
