Surprise City Council approves funding for new park, park enhancements
Surprise, AZ (December 17, 2020) The Surprise City Council voted December 15 to fund more than $8 million in park-related projects that advance the goals of the city’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
The following projects were approved by Council:
- Gaines Youth Baseball Field Completion – This funding moves up the timeline to complete the Gaines Youth Ball Field at Nash and Rimrock streets by this summer! The project includes a lighted youth ball field, restrooms, lighted and paved parking lot, netting and fencing.
- New 8-Acre Park – Design for a new eight-acre park, on city-owned land at Greenway Road and Parkview Place will begin by the end of June 2021. Construction on a lighted park, restrooms and parking lot will follow, with anticipated completion in 2022. This project provides for more programmable and rental field space.
- Surprise Community Park Enhancements – Utilizing a $3 million budget, this project may include paving the north parking lot at the Surprise Community Park, adding a restroom on the north side, improving dog park drainage and exploring new lighting in the area. The final project list will be determined following design and submittal of actual costs.
Funding for these projects is thanks in part to strong growth in housing permits and retail sales collections, resulting in better-than-expected one-time revenue from fiscal year 2020.
