July 4th Fireworks Display update – new “Glow Off” contest, ramada rentals now available
Surprise, AZ (June 26, 2020) - As previously announced, this year’s City of Surprise Fourth of July Celebration will be greatly modified in an effort to avoid mass gatherings and maintain physical distancing, in accordance with CDC recommendations to reduce the spread of COVID-19. To safely add to the celebration of our nation’s independence, we are introducing a fun social media contest. Additionally, park ramada rentals have resumed under guidance to reduce gathering size and maintain six feet physical distance from others.
On Saturday, July 4th, the city will feature a 20-minute fireworks display beginning at 8:40 p.m. The display will be staged in the area around Bullard Avenue and Paradise Lane.
The city encourages people to observe the fireworks show remotely from their homes or vehicles, as the display will be visible from vantage points across the community. Limited surface parking is available at Surprise Stadium, Surprise Aquatic Center and Dreamcatcher Park. While not recommended, should observers choose to drive to the Civic Center and Recreation Campus area, parking will be first come and must be done in accordance with state and local traffic laws.
Bullard Avenue will be closed between Tierra Buena Lane and Paradise Lane from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. See a map detailing the road closures and parking locations: Event Map
Unlike past celebrations, there will be no baseball game, food trucks, beverage sales, pool party, or any additional entertainment. Ramada rentals for all parks are first come, first served. To reserve a ramada, please call the Parks and Recreation office at 623.222.2000. Personal grill use is prohibited within Civic Center, all parks, and the Surprise Recreation Campus. In compliance with Arizona state law, the consumption of alcohol in vehicles or in public spaces is not permitted. Shade canopies must be weighted down – no stakes permitted.
Please remember the city now requires face coverings in public settings where it is difficult to maintain a minimum physical distance of six (6) feet from others who do not live in the same residence. For details on this order, including Frequently Asked Questions, please visit: surpriseaz.gov/facecoverings.
For the health and safety of our community, please also remember to follow all CDC guidelines for protecting yourself against COVID-19, including limiting gatherings to less than 10 people and keeping a minimum of six feet physical distancing between your gathering and others’.
In addition to the fireworks display, the City of Surprise Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a Fourth of July “Glow” themed contest! Let’s have fun making it glow in our homes before watching the fireworks glow in the air on the 4th!
The contest, open to Surprise residents of all ages, will be a “Glow Off!” What is a Glow Off, you ask? Put together your best glow accessories and create a show! Whether it is a Glow-outfit or a Glow-dance, we will accept a variety of submissions which will then be shared on our social media pages.
Contest entries must be submitted by 3 p.m. Friday, July 3rd for a chance to win a Fourth of July themed party pack! Three winners will be drawn at random from the submissions. Depending on the submission, we can accept files in video (MP4 preferred) or picture format (JPEG, PNG). Please email your submission to Frank.DAndrea@surpriseaz.gov.
