Surprise water professionals, facilities honored with AZ Water Association awards
Surprise, AZ (April 24, 2020) The city’s Water Resource Management department is the recipient of multiple 2020 AZ Water Association awards, including Operator of the Year, Technology Professional of the Year and four facility safety awards.
The AZ Water Association awards recognizes members, facilities and projects that have excelled throughout the year.
Surprise Lead Water Operator Ryan Hime has been recognized as the 2020 Water Operator of the Year- Large System. Recipients in the operation leader category are awarded based on their significant contributions to the water/wastewater industry and to AZ Water.
Hime was nominated for the award because of his ability to lead teams, prioritize tasks and find innovative solutions to challenging water operations issues.
In addition to his water operations responsibilities, Hime was recognized for his commitment to educating future generations of water operations professionals as demonstrated by his participation in leading plant tours and assisting with classes at the Surprise-GateWay Training Center.
Maris Adams, SCADA Systems Supervisor, is the recipient of the Technology Professional of the Year – Large Systems. This award recognizes an individual for their notable service to the AZ Water Association in the categories pertaining to water, wastewater, collections and distribution.
Adams received the nomination for multiple reasons including his dedication to updating programming in the water resource department, both correcting issues as well as improving system effectiveness. His ability to upgrade systems and identify additional areas for improved efficiency in water, wastewater and collections has saved the department more than $100,000 annually.
The city also received safety awards for the following water resource facilities:

- Surprise WRF – SPA1
- Surprise SPA 2 WRF
