Special Olympics Team

Special Olympics sports are competitive sports leagues created for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The focus of Special Olympics is to provide children and adults with the opportunity to develop physical fitness and skills, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and increase socialization.

All athletes must have a Special Olympics physical on file with the City of Surprise prior to the start of the program.

Special Olympics Basketball

The Special Olympics basketball league was created for athletes with intellectual disabilities who have the desire to participate in the game of basketball. Guidelines are based from rules set forth by Special Olympics. This is a competitive league and transportation to the Special Olympics Tournament is required. Practices will be held weekly.

Ages: 8 and older
Location: Sunset Hills Elementary School Gym

Special Olympics Swim

Special Olympic athletes will train twice weekly in the sport of swimming. Participants will learn to refine swim strokes, sportsmanship, and teamwork in preparation to represent the city at the State Swimming Championship. This is a competitive sports league and all athletes must be able to swim independently.

Ages: 10 and older
Locations: Surprise Aquatic Center and Hollyhock Pool

Special Olympics Softball

This program is designed to teach athletes with intellectual disabilities the sport of competitive softball. Athletes will practice weekly in preparation for the annual Special Olympics State Fall Games. This is a competitive adult only sports league.

Ages: 18 and older

Special Olympics Bocce

This program is designed to teach athletes with developmental and intellectual disabilities the sport of Bocce Ball. Athletes will practice weekly in preparation for the annual Special Olympics Fall Games. Bocce ball (also known as lawn bowling) is a game of strategy and technique where athletes compete by rolling balls at a designated marker ball for points. This is a competitive sports league.
