The Surprise City Council appointed David Sanders to serve as the new District 5 Councilmember on January 3, 2019. The term expiration for this appointment will be December 31, 2020, and the remainder of the four-year term will be placed on the next scheduled council election in August 2020 per state statute. Eight residents of District 5 (D5) applied to fill the vacancy on City Council, following former D5 Councilmember Skip Hall’s appointment to Mayor.
The application filing period closed at 5 p.m., Monday, December 10. The City Council interviewed the applicants in a Special City Council Meeting, Thursday, December 20, 2018. Each applicant was given 10 minutes to provide an overall summary incorporating qualifications, resume, and background. After the interviews, City Council posed questions, followed by a public comment period from those in attendance. Public comments were also collected online, in-person and by mail via the City Clerk’s office. At the January 3, 2019 Regular City Council Meeting, City Council appointed David Sanders to serve as the new District 5 (D5) Councilmember, and he was immediately sworn into office.
