About Treat and Refer

On February 7, 2017 the Surprise Fire-Medical Department became a recognized EMS agency in the Treat and Refer Recognition Program approved by the Arizona Department of Health Services. Treat and Refer was recognized by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services and approved by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System to offer 9-1-1 callers with alternative options when 9-1-1 is called. Surprise Fire-Medical provides 9-1-1 callers with the option of receiving treatment at home, followed by referral to destinations that can provide immediate access to care in non-emergent situations. Destination and referral options in the treat and refer program include behavioral health providers, urgent care, primary care/specialists, crisis response or the option of staying home. All patients who elect to receive treat and refer service also receive follow up to document improvement in care, and also to identify subsequent episodes that may occur within 72 hours following treatment. Surprise Fire-Medical began offering treat and refer on July 10, 2017 and is excited to offer the added service to residents and guests of the City of Surprise.
