Building Safety

Building Safety is responsible for processing building permits and plan reviews. This division also conducts building inspections to ensure safety and monitors code compliance of structures located within the city.


Proposed Building Code Amendments


 
The City of Surprise Community Development Department is proposing local amendments to the adopted 2012 International Building Codes.

The proposed local amendments under review include changes that are intended to: 
 
  • Further streamline the amendments to align more with the published 2012 Building and Fire codes
  • Ensure both the Building and Fire codes are in concert with each other and Arizona Revised Statutes, specifically as it relates to group occupancies
  • Identify and clarify Fire Protection requirements for new construction and tenant improvements projects
  • To create a uniform appeal process in conjunction with a proposed ordinance modifying the appeal boards

Timeline


 
A public input meeting will be held August 31 from 6-8 p.m. in the Community Room of Surprise City Hall.

Following the public input meeting, City Council will review the amendments for possible action. The item is scheduled for the City Council Work Session on September 20 and the Regular Session on October 4. Meeting agendas will be posted at least 24 hours in advance at http://agenda.surpriseaz.gov.
