Communities throughout the United States have looked to their Fire Department to provide valuable services for their citizens. These services are essential for communities to develop, grow and prosper safely. An essential component of service the Fire Department provides is Fire & Life Safety Services.

Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, Fire & Life Safety Services is made up of 2 personnel and a volunteer. The service programs are organized to provide the highest quality customer service to fulfill the Department’s mission.

Fire & Life Safety Services focuses on educating the community about the benefits of proper safety practices and identifying and eliminating all types of hazardous conditions, which pose a threat to life, the environment and property.

Services cover a diverse area of responsibilities as related to Fire & Life Safety. Diverse activities of commercial, industrial and residential development and operations are processed and inspected. New processes and products must be analyzed and codes and inspections kept current. Fires must be investigated and the information entered into the information management system to update and improve the safety of the community and our personnel.

Inspection. Conducts annual inspections of public schools and charter schools, adult and child day care facilities, nursing homes, outpatient surgery centers and dialysis clinics, residential care facilities, assisted living centers, city and county detention facilities.

Fire Investigation: Conducts investigations of major alarm fires and other fires to determine the cause or investigate suspected arson. They interview witnesses, collect evidence, write reports, and conduct training programs for Departmental personnel.

Codes & Ordinances: Fire Department is the authority having jurisdiction to interpret the fire code, approve fire code waivers, and establish written policies regarding the application of the fire code. The Fire Department maintains oversight of the 2006 International Fire Code, local amendments, and related national standards. Researches and answers technical requests for information, and proposals fire code changes.

Fire Hydrants & Water Supply: Partnering with Water Service providers the FD maintains oversight to ensure uniformity and reliability of fire hydrant systems in the City of Surprise.
