In 2013 the number violent crimes decreased 7% and the number of property crimes decreased 15% compared to 2012. Total Part 1 Crimes decreased 14% in 2013 with 2,277 total Part 1 Crimes compared to 2,663 in 2012. In 2013 the FBI updated the definition for rape to include crimes that previously were not classified under rape.

Surprise continues to be one of the lowest cities for crimes per 1000 residents in the Phoenix area.

There were a total of 39,028 calls for service in 2013 compared to 41,341 in 2012, a 6% decrease.
