October 2011 -The Surprise City Council unanimously approved an agreement bringing a 60,000 square foot family entertainment center to Surprise at its meeting Tuesday night. The center, to be called Uptown Alley, will have laser tag, climbing walls, and a long awaited bowling alley with dozens of lanes. The facility will also host a restaurant, groups and special events.
According to Community and Economic Development Director Jeff Mihelich, Uptown Alley
represents a major step forward in family entertainment opportunities in Surprise, as well as a $4 million capital investment and 75 new jobs. The center will be built at the southeast corner of Litchfield and Waddell roads and is scheduled to open in the spring of 2012, he added.
Uptown Alley’s Steve Uphoff told the Council to expect “a Disney experience” at an “entertainment mecca” for all ages.
“Family entertainment is a need in Surprise and Uptown Alley will be a very welcome addition to our community landscape,” Mihelich said. “It fits well with the Council’s Strategic Plan and is responsive to what residents have been saying they want to see.”
Mihelich adds that the development agreement with Uptown Alley II, LLC is incentive based and is phased to encourage performance. “Council approved $40,000 in plan review and inspection credits, after-hours inspection service and providing temporary office space to Uptown Alley in our business incubator, the AZ TechCelerator,” he said. In addition, the City will assist with a job fair for the company.
