Heard Museum West presents Growing Up Navajo - Dec. 5
Growing Up Navajo
This presentation is a glimpse into the life of Jaclyn Roessel. Follow her as she explains the teachings of her grandmothers, the importance of the Kinaalda ceremony and weaving, along with other experiences growing up on the Navajo Nation.
Jaclyn is currently the Education Programming Associate at the Heard Museum West in Surprise, AZ.
Surprise to host Wheelchair Basketball Tournament - Dec. 8
The Surprise Community and Recreation Services Department will host the city’s first Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on Saturday, December 8, at Valley Vista High School, 15550 North Parkview Place. Teams will include the home team Surprise Road Runners, the San Diego Xpress, the Chargers from Cypress College in California and the Northridge Knights. These teams are all members of the Southern California Wheelchair Basketball Conference and this tournament is a portion of their 12-game season.
Games start at 8 a.m. and run throughout the day with the final game starting at 5:30 p.m. Admission is FREE and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, please call Recreation Manager Paul Frie at 623.222.2240.

Heard Museum West Continuing Education Series - Dec. 18
Join us as we focus our attention on the beautiful baskets that are made in many American Indian Cultures in the Southwest.
Weaving Worlds: Stories of Arizona’s Native Basket weavers (43 minutes) Tohono O’odham, Apache and Hopi basket weavers discuss what weaving means to them: identity, tradition and what defines them as a culture.
From the Inside Out (27 minutes) Navajo history is turbulent and baskets are a part of this history, changing throughout time and adapting with the people. Initially purely functional pieces, baskets gradually became integrated into various ceremonies, elevating them to sacred and symbolic levels.
