"Beat the Heat:" teens race Surprise Police legally
SURPRISE, AZ (Aug. 17, 2009 ) Local teens have the chance to legally race Surprise Police Officers through the "Beat the Heat" program at the Speedworld Drag Strip on select dates through November.
Teens can bring their own vehicles to the track to race police in a friendly competition designed to give them something fun to do and interact with police in a positive way.
"This program is good way for our youth to get to know our police officers and provides our department with an opportunity to promote drug and alcohol prevention," says Police Chief Dan Hughes. "Our June and August races were big hits and we're happy to work with Speedworld to offer more racing dates in the months ahead."
Future "Beat the Heat" race dates are:
Wednesday, September 23 (gates open at 6 p.m.)
Wednesday, October 21 (gates open at 6 p.m.)
Wednesday, November 18 (gates open at 6 p.m.)
All local teens are welcome to participate. Drivers under the age of 18 are required to have parental consent. The cost is $10 to race or to watch. Speedworld is located one-mile west of Grand Avenue on Happy Valley Road.
